A centralized Residual Mix database

ResidualMix.org

a stakeholder-driven platform to support accurate carbon accounting

The basis of any carbon accounting claim is reliable and robust data. Residual Mixes are a necessary component in allowing end-users to make claims associated with electricity usage. They show how renewable ownership claims impact emission factors and enable accurate disclosure aligned with power sector tracking principles.A residual mix represents the portion of electricity that remains untracked after all contractual claims, such as Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs), have been removed, effectively capturing the unclaimed or untracked attributes of grid-supplied power.

Finding local residual mix data has historically posed significant challenges. The Residualmix.org is intended to simplify this with clear data and accurate sourcing. The I-TRACK Foundation maintains this database to display I-TRACK Foundation residual mix calculations, European residual mix calculations, and others to enable accurate residual mix accounting across as many jurisdictions as possible.  Governments, standard-setting bodies, and EAC issuers have all supported in creating the basis for the information found on residualmix.org.

What is the Residual Mix

Contractual claims made through EAC-based transferred ownership of electricity attributes that would otherwise be shared across the grid to individual beneficiaries; the residual mix represents the remaining attributes after these claims are removed to prevent double claiming.

Methodologies

Different methodologies for calculating the residual mix can lead to varying results, so clear alignment and transparency between these approaches are essential to support accurate accounting and decision-making by electricity end-users.

This world map shows the penetration of EACs in the national electricity market, in addition to the energy sources and carbon content in the residual mix. More information about a country can be found on the country page, and data submissions by national representatives are always welcome.
